Music Theory – 0023

Are we in a routine yet? There is the I – vi – IV – V chord progression and we have two different methods of making a bass line, with an up and down arpeggiated bass line and also the Alberti Bass. Well, I guess my job is done as you now have the tools to create an infinite number of songs. No? Hmmm. Let’s look at completing our current assignment, or rather the solution I just came up with and then I’ll try to decide where to go next.

I’ll put in two pictures here, first the last stage of the piece we have been working on and immediately following that I’ll put in my own solution.

1645BasicMelody

1645Complete

You have your variation and I have mine. It’s all good. I kept every note from the basic melody in the exact same place but often I changed its rhythmic value to something shorter. When writing music you can change anything you want anywhere. Please note in the basic melody every note is taken from the chord for that measure.

This is a very easy method of writing music: take an existing common chord progression, arpeggiate for the bass (the Alberti Bass is an arpeggiation), make a basic melody from notes in the chord of the moment, and then expand on that simple melody using the scale of the key you are in as you like (we’ve stayed strictly in the key of C Major so far). A lot of making it sound good is to not overdo things with lots of fast notes over a prolonged period of time.

Let’s do another with the same chord progression but in a different time signature so I can introduce you to a third kind of bass line. I’ll get you started next time.

  1. I’m impressed. Though I have no idea what you are talking about. I know many people do… and they are blessed to have you offering your knowledge here! What a gift you are gifting here! I am surprised that more have not come on board. I think that your tags need to be re-visted!!!! Are you stopping to put in categories when you post?! I don’t see them. I really feel that the interest here would be a thousand times more… if you would take the time to put in the correct tags and categories of interest. I know when people click on a blog, a lot of them have done so via a search engine.
    Just a thought….
I feel if you are helping just one person, it is not a waste. But it is ashame that other people who would love to find you … don’t even know what you are offering.
    Just saying! 😉

    • You have to follow from the beginning and then probably work at it to know what is going on here. The one specific person I am designing all this for is enjoying it very much. And he is an absolute beginner. What I am presenting is hard, I know that, but it is about writing music not learning how to play.

  2. Soooo…. I just saw that you did tag this. But it is wierd. When I tag something it appears at the top of my post. You might want to add more simple descriptions like song writing which I see you have… Maybe…. Anyway, I am shocked not more people are embracing your blog and I feel it is because they really don’t know you are here.

    • You are very right here. I should be adding more consistent and generic tags to each of these song-writing posts. Maybe once I’m burned out for the day I’ll come up with two or three obvious tags and make sure each of these Music Theory posts has them. Better to do it now before it is a truly monumental task!

  3. Write more, thats all I have to say. Literally, it seems as though you relied on the video
to make your point. You definitely know what youre
talking about, why throw away your intelligence on just posting videos to
your weblog when you could be giving us something informative to read?

    • Odd that you post this comment in an article where I do not use a video. This series of articles on theory toward simple song construction does require words, pictures, and sound. The videos are rather rare, really. I don’t know whether to treat this comment as spam or not. I think your comment strikes me most because it has been a while since I have had the will to write much at all, that not being the case when this particular article was written but more so in the last few months.
